Abstract:
This study examined the role of religious institutions in enhancing peace, with a focus
on the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) Morogoro Diocese as a case
study. Grounded in a constructivist research philosophy, the study employed a
qualitative research approach and a case study design. The main objective was to explore
how religious teachings, activities, and collaboration with other stakeholders contribute
to peace building efforts. The specific objectives were to identify how religious
teachings advocate for peace, to determine religious activities that promote societal
peace, and to examine the interrelationship between religion and other stakeholders in
fostering peace. Data were collected from a sample of 30 members of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) Morogoro Diocese through in-depth interviews
and focus group discussions. A combination of probability and non-probability sampling
techniques was used to select participants. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret
the qualitative data. The findings highlight that the church plays a crucial role in
promoting peace through the advocacy of core religious teachings such as forgiveness,
reconciliation, and human equality. Religious activities, including peace education
programs and community engagement, further contribute to peace building by fostering
dialogue and cooperation. Moreover, the study revealed that effective collaboration
between religious institutions and other stakeholders, such as civil society organisations,
enhances peace efforts by addressing the root causes of conflict and promoting social
cohesion. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania Morogoro Diocese significantly
contributes to peace through its teachings, activities, and collaborative efforts. The study
recommends increasing public awareness of the peace-promoting role of religious
institutions, expanding research to include other faith traditions, and encouraging
stronger partnerships between religious organisations and policymakers to foster a more
peaceful and resilient society.
