his study evaluated the effectiveness of refugee community engagement strategy in mitigating
refugee related crimes in the Kasulu Rural District. The study was guided by the Routine
Activities Theory and Social Disorganization Theory with three specific research objectives
namely; analysis of refugee engagement strategy for the prevention of refugee related crimes,
the impacts of refugee engagement strategy on the prevention of refugee related crimes, and
barriers to refugee engagement strategy on the prevention of refugee related crimes. The target
population was 181,187 individuals. Probability and nonprobability sampling techniques were
used to obtain 198 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires, interview guides,
and document-analysis guides. The validity and reliability of the research instrument were
ensured by the IAA lectures. Data were analysed using descriptive and thematic methods. The
findings revealed a high level of awareness regarding refugee engagement measures and the
positive impact of refugee engagement efforts on safety improvements within and around the
camp. In contrast, language barriers, cultural factors, and coordination between various
organisations dealing with refugees found to pose a significant challenge to the effectiveness
of refugee engagement initiatives. This study highlights the positive impact of safety to both
refugees and local communities surrounding the camp. To mitigate refugee related crime, the
study recommends improved collaboration, communication, and innovative solutions to
enhance safety measures in and around refugee camps |
