ABSTRACT
This study assessed the effectiveness of youth engagement strategy in the prevention
of drug abuse in Arusha City Council. The study was guided by the Social Learning
Theory with three specific research objectives which were to examine the youth
engagement strategy on prevention of drug abuse in Arusha City Council, to
determine the contribution of youth engagement strategy on prevention of drug
abuse, to find out the challenges affecting youth engagement strategy on prevention
of drug abuse. The study used a pragmatism research philosophy, a mixed-method
research approach, and a convergent research design. The target population was 673
people. Probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used to obtain 115
respondents. Data was collected by using questionnaires and interview guides. The
validity and reliability of the research instrument were ensured by the Institute of
Accountancy Arusha subject matter experts, operational definition of key terms, and
pilot testing of research tools. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and
thematic analysis techniques. Findings revealed varying awareness levels and
challenges in youth engagement for drug abuse prevention. Active participation was
found to be impactful, yet inclusivity and communication barriers were found to
persist. The study underscores that community involvement is key in the mitigation
of drug abuse. The mitigate drug abuse, the study recommends the enhancement of
communication strategies and fostering inclusivity for effective youth engagement
within Arusha City Council.
