Abstract:
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of e-immigration services in preventing irregular
immigration in Tanzania, particularly at the Immigration Department in Mwanza. The
research had three specific objectives namely identifying the types of e-immigration services
utilized to prevent irregular immigration, examining their effectiveness, and identifying the
challenges faced by these services. The research employs a mixed-methods approach,
utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to garner comprehensive insights.
A total sample size of 60 respondents, comprising immigration officers, was involved, with
data collected through questionnaires, and interviews. The findings reveal that e
immigration services significantly contribute to the prevention of irregular immigration,
with a strong mean score of 4 reflecting their effectiveness. The effectiveness of immigration
services, which received a mean score of 4, effectively meets migrants' needs and improves
compliance with immigration regulations, corroborated by a significant positive correlation
of 0.464 with preventing irregular immigration. However, challenges persist, particularly
technological barriers (mean score 3), data privacy concerns (mean score 4), and resistance
to digital solutions (mean score 4), which collectively impede service effectiveness. In
conclusion, while e-immigration services demonstrate substantial potential in preventing
irregular immigration, addressing the identified challenges is crucial for enhancing their
effectiveness. The study highlights the importance of refining e-immigration services to
foster inclusivity and efficiency in Tanzania. Recommendations include enhancing
accessibility and digital literacy in the community, improving data privacy policies, and
fostering staff training to bolster user engagement and service delivery. The study
underscores the importance of refining e-immigration services to promote inclusivity and
effectiveness.
