Abstract:
The growing land conflicts in the society generate concerns about the role of Non
Government Organisations (NGOs) in preventing these conflicts. This study
examined the role of NGOs in mitigating land conflicts in Babati District Council.
The study was guided by two theories namely; Peace Building Theory and
Integrative Conflict Resolution Theory with three specific objectives which were to
identify the NGO practices in mitigation of land conflicts, to examine the
contribution of NGO in prevention of land conflicts, and challenges affecting NGOs
in mitigation of land conflicts. The study adopted an interpretivism research
philosophy, a qualitative approach, and a case study research design. The target
population was 81 individuals. A non-probability sampling technique was used to
obtain 14 participants through a purposive sampling technique. Data was collected
by using interview guides and document analysis guides. Pilot testing of research
instruments and the Institute of Accountancy Arusha subject matter experts ensured
the validity and reliability of the research instruments. Data was analyzed by using
the thematic analysis technique. Findings revealed inadequate conflict resolution
training to community members, successful land conflict mediation sessions,
inadequate dialogue sessions, and reduction in land conflicts. Also the study finds
that inadequate public awareness, political interference, and cultural barriers impede
effective conflict resolution efforts by NGOs. The study underscores the crucial role
of NGOs like Vision Fund and Mama Samia Legal Aid in mitigating land conflicts.
To enhance NGO impact, it is essential to prioritize personalized awareness
initiatives, navigate political pressures strategically, and engage communities with
cultural sensitivity to address land disputes effectively.
