Abstract:
This study examined the effectiveness of crisis management strategies in ensuring the
sustainable operations of Air Tanzania in the face of financial, operational, and human
resource related disruptions. The research was guided by three specific objectives: (i) to
assess the effect of financial crisis management strategies on the sustainable operations of
Air Tanzania, (ii) to examine the effect of operational crisis management strategies on
sustainable operations, and (iii) to evaluate the role of human resource crisis management
strategies in ensuring the sustainability of the airline’s operations. The study adopted a
descriptive research design and employed a mixed-methods approach. A sample size of
187 respondents was drawn from various departments of Air Tanzania, complemented by
key informant interviews that provided qualitative insights. Quantitative data were
analyzed using descriptive statistics, including means and standard deviations, while
qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that financial crisis
management strategies specifically cost reduction (overall mean = 4.04), revenue
diversification (4.11), and liquidity management (4.04) play a significant role in
enhancing operational sustainability. Operational crisis management strategies, including
flexible scheduling, health and safety compliance, and contingency planning, were also
found to be vital in reducing disruptions and maintaining service continuity. Additionally,
human resource crisis management strategies namely staff training (overall mean = 4.12),
employee safety (4.11), and workforce communication (4.14) were identified as key
contributors to employee readiness, safety and organisational resilience during crises. The
study concludes that the integration of financial, operational, and human resource crisis
management strategies is essential for ensuring sustainable airline operations, especially
in volatile environments such as the aviation industry. The research recommends
strengthening crisis preparedness frameworks, enhancing staff capacity development,
institutionalising contingency planning, and improving communication systems to further
support operational continuity. These findings contribute to the growing body of
knowledge on crisis and sustainability management in African aviation and provide
practical insights for policy makers, airline managers and regulatory bodies
