Abstract:
The main objective of the study was to examine the effect of refugee influx on national
security, a case of Kasulu District, Tanzania. The study had three specific research
objectives namely, to assess the social effects of refugee influx on security in Kasulu
district, to examine the role of social integration between refugees and the host
community in maintaining security in Kasulu district, and lastly to examine the measures
and strategies implemented in addressing the security challenges related to the refugee
influx. The study was guided by Securitization Theory as well as social integration
theory, a qualitative method approach was adopted in this study. A purposive sampling
techniques were used to select 35 respondents and data was collected through,
interviews, and focus group discussion. Qualitative data was analysed through thematic
analysis. The influx of refugees in Kasulu District has created notable security
challenges, particularly petty theft in market areas due to refugees’ economic struggles.
Increased security concerns have caused unease among residents, especially at night,
while businesses near refugee camps report theft, fraud, mistrust, robbery and higher
operational costs. To address these issues, local authorities and communities have
implemented strategies like installing locks, hiring guards, and initiating joint projects,
including agricultural initiatives, to tackle shared challenges such as food insecurity. The
study recommends regular patrols in shared spaces to enhance security, NGOs and
development partners fostering collaboration between refugees and host communities,
and community members participating in integration efforts like shared projects, cultural
events, and education
