Abstract:
This study assessed the awareness of community policing strategy on crime prevention
in the Meru District Council. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the awareness
of community policing strategy on crime prevention, to determine the contribution of
awareness of community policing strategy on crime prevention, and to find out the
challenges affecting awareness of community policing strategy on crime prevention.
The study adopted a pragmatism research philosophy, a mixed-method research
approach, and a convergent research design. The target population was 29,938 people
whereby probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used to obtain 106
research participants through purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Data
was collected by using questionnaires and interview guides. The validity and reliability
of the research instrument were ensured through pilot testing and Institute of
Accountancy Arusha subject matter experts for feedback and improvement of tools.
Data was analyzed through descriptive statistics and thematic analysis techniques.
Findings revealed varied levels of awareness and engagement with community
policing strategies, limited participation, and knowledge disparities on reporting and
crime prevention roles were evident. Also, findings revealed the positive impact of
community policing on crime reduction, personal benefits, and safety perceptions,
however; challenges were found to persist in building trust between community
members and the police. Further, findings revealed limited information sharing,
unclear communication channels, and accessibility challenges. The study concluded
that community policing awareness is pivotal for crime prevention. The study
recommends educational campaigns, increase participation, improve communication,
clarify roles, emphasize trust-building, and foster active community involvement for
stronger collaboration in ensuring safer communities.
