ABSTRACT
This study assessed public servants' participation in professional development programmes
and its influence on job performance at Siha District Council. The study applied quantitative
research approach which involved explanatory research design. The study involved a samp'e
size 249 respondents that were randomly selected from the population 1016 employees
working at Siha District Council. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and
regression analysis. Firstly, this study showed that employees participated in higher education
programmes, induction programmes, on-the-job training, and occupational safety. The study
found that succession leadership and mentorship programmes are least offered at Sha
District Council. Secondly, the findings also showed that participation in professional
development training has helped public servants to improve working in teams, improve
communication skills, and improve employees' ability to provide services that meet needs of
customers. Thirdly, study revealed that participation of public servants in professional
development programmes at Siha District Council is affected by inadequate allocation of
budget, lack of clear guidelines, poor management commitment and favoritism in allocation of
professional development opportunities. The study concludes that job performance depends
upon availability of professional development programmes for employees. Key Words: Professional Development, Employees. Job Performance, Training
