Abstract
This study examined the involvement of communities in water supply projects for the sustainability
of the service in Tanzania. The specific objectives of the study include finding out the ways in which
rural communities are involved at the planning stage in the Arumeru district, exploring the ways in
which communities are involved during the implementation stage Arumeru district, examining the
ways the community is involved in the operation and maintenance of water supply projects Arumeru
district. The theory which guided this study is Diffusion of innovation theory, Descriptive research
design was used with a mixed-methods research approach. The targeted population for this study is
the rural communities in Arumeru District, Tanzania. The sample is 90 participants who were selected
using a purposive sampling technique for the interview participants and a stratified random sampling
for the questionnaire respondents. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics
with tables, graphs, and pie charts while content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. The
statistical package for social science (SPSS) for Windows version 26 is used to process quantitative
data to obtain percentages and frequency
