dc.description.abstract The aim of this study was to assess the role of human resource management (HRM) practices towards organizational performance in private universities in Arusha Region. The study was guided by three research objectives namely to; determine HRM practices performed by human resource managers in private universities, assess the contribution of HRM on organizational performance in private universities and determine best HRM practices towards enhancing organizational performance in private universities in Arusha region. The study was guided by Ability, Motivation, and Opportunities (AMO) Theory and Resource-Based Theory. The study engaged a total of 82 participants, comprising 48 academic staff, 32 non – academic staff and 2 human resource managers using both stratified and simple random sampling techniques. The data for the study was collected using both questionnaires and interview guide and analyzed using both descriptive analysis and content analysis before being presented in tables and descriptions. The study findings reveal that, respondents were satisfied with the institution's training and development opportunities and the hiring process for job opportunities. However, they emphasized the importance of job security in these institutions. In addition, the study revealed some best practices of HRM such as ability to recruit suitable employees, fair compensation system linked to performance and relevant training programs tailored to positively influence employee performance and overall organization performance. It was recommended that the university managers should prioritize maintaining and enhancing the proficiency of HRM practices. Moreover, Human resource managers should focus on strengthening HRM practices that positively impact on employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention. In conclusion, the employees should actively engage in HRM practices and take advantage of the opportunities provided, such as training programs and development initiatives and also should participate in recruitment processes and provide valuable input, contributing to the selection of suitable candidates. en_US
