Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the sustainability of water projects in
Babati District, Tanzania. The research focused on community participation, collaboration with
the local government, and the effectiveness of community capacity building. A descriptive study
design was used, incorporating quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
methods. Data was collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions and
analyzed using SPSS for quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. The findings
revealed that the project had moderate sustainability, with community participation being a key
factor. Collaboration with the local government was limited, leading to decreased sustainability,
and there were deficiencies in community capacity building, especially in infrastructure
maintenance. The study concludes that involving the local government from the early stages of
project design and strengthening community capacity building is crucial for achieving
sustainability in water projects implemented by NGOs
