Abstract:
This study examined the extent of alcohol abuse among Police Officers in the Police Stations
located at Arusha region for the aiming of understanding the source of the problem and suggests
the best way on how to overcome the problem of the effects of alcohol to Police Officers work
performance: Working on prevention of too much consumption of alcohol can be useful as they
help in reduction of risks associated such as potential harm to police officers for example alcohol
related offense are one of the most likely reasons for them to be fired and officers who drink on
the job can cause harmful, costly and dangerous mistakes. Zavala and Don (2017)
This study investigated the factors which influencing alcohol abuse among Police Officers and
evaluated the effects caused by alcohol abuse among Police Officers in Police Stations located at
Arusha region. The study adopted a case study design and both qualitative and quantitative
approaches were used. Targeted population were employee working in selected Police Stations in
Arusha who were selected using simple random sampling to obtain a sample size of 303
employees as respondents in this study out of 1256 of the total population. Data were collected
through questionnaire and interview. Data were analyzed through content analysis and descriptive
analysis. From the findings, the study shows that performance of police officers is affected by
excessive alcoholism. The study further showed that excessive alcoholism is much influenced by
nature of work performed like working long hours without get enough time to rest, leadership style
of management, and unequal distribution of rewards. The researcher recommended that multiple
agencies including the Ministries of Law, Industry, Agriculture, Revenue, Health, Home, Customs
and Enforcement, non-governmental organizations, and medical associations should be involved
in the formulation of alcohol consumption regulation policies
