Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of leadership styles on employee’s performance in Tanzania public organizations. The principle question addressed by this study was “what is the influence of leadership styles on employee’s performance in Tanzania public organizations?” To answer this question and to achieve the primary objective of this study, the researcher focused on National Housing Cooperation (NHC) as a case study. NHC has been selected for this study because their one of the major public organizations with a significant portfolio in Tanzania public sector, some of which have succeeded whereas others have failed. The research design used was explanatory which allows a detailed description and analysis of the variables under study; describing and presenting their characteristics and explaining their relationships without manipulation. The sample of the target population composed of 66respondents who are employees of NHC headquarter. The study used questionnaires as the primary research instrument. The data were coded as per the objectives to give distinct differences and multivariate regression was done to look at the relationship of the variables. Presentation also was done through their calculated mean, frequency, standard deviation and the correlation analysis of the data collected. The study found that indeed leadership styles have significant influence on employee’s performance.
The study concluded that; transformational style of leadership was dominantly used in National Housing Cooperation (NHC) as it turned out to have the highest correlation with the employee’s performance followed by transactional leadership style, despite of having many leadership styles such as autocratic and laissez-faire which turned out to have the weak relationship with employee’s performance. Furthermore, it is also concluded from the study that employees were satisfied with the leadership style existed NHC because the leadership style existed promoted employee’s performance. The study recommends that there should be regular training for leaders on how best they can use various leadership styles to enhance employee’s performance and ultimately improve the organization’s performance. Finally, the study recommends the evaluation of efficiency of the currently used leadership styles should be conducted so that employees can be able to provide their opinions regarding the identified gaps with the motive of improving their performance.
