The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the maintenance of buildings in secondary schools in Tanzania. Public buildings in secondary schools in Tanzania have been affected by many factors which make them unfriendly for use. Governments’ buildings lag behind maintenance and refurbishment, this leads to bad appearance of government buildings especially public secondary schools considering public secondary schools found in Arusha region. This research study adopted case study research design because it allows flexibility in data collection and it saves time and costs. The study population included 256 teachers, 6720 students and 50 council authority leaders a sample size of 100 respondents was drawn from the total population through purposive and stratified random sampling technique. This study involved both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Data were collected through interview and questionnaires and were analysed through descriptive analysis, narrative analysis and content analysis. The study findings show that classes and latrines have poor quality due to inadequate supply of financial support and the nature of topography. It is recommended that there must be a country wide process for construction of laboratories in public secondary schools in Tanzania, regular maintenance of school buildings and increase number of toilets to accommodate the number of students. |
