Abstract:
This study aimed to examine the role of motivation in improving performance in the delivery of Public Services (PS)
in Tanzania with a particular focus on Civil Servants (CS) in the Arusha City Council (ACC). The specific
objectives were to examined whether CS in the ACC are intrinsically motivated to deliver Public Services. The
study adopted a descriptive research design with the survey strategy and employed a mixed method research
approach to collect and analyses data. Questionnaire, observation and interview guide were tools used to collect
primary data. Motivation proven to improve performance in the delivery of Public Services in Tanzania there is a
significant relationship between salary, bonus, allowances, promotions, and benefits and CS performance. It is
recommended that the government should create communication platforms through which CS ideas, concerns and
thoughts can be heard. Also, the government should create a flexible and productive working environment for CS,
along with incentivizing workplaces through timely provision of favorable intrinsic and extrinsic motivations.
